Translation Skills
Some records are impossible to read for many reasons. You may find the
correct volume
and even the right page where details are written that you need to know, but
the
details may be impossible to read.
Some pages that were photographed in the 1950-1960's and digitized just
recently are
very dark. Although some adjustment is possible in the screen image intensity,
some
pages will remain illegible. There's not much that can be done to make all
the
handwriting readable.
Another type of image which will be near impossible to read is one where
there is
bleed through from the other side of the page. And then there will be pages
with
lines through handwriting that makes the original data impossible to read.
This
often happens when a person or family moves from one parish to another.
The variety of handwriting ranges from beautifully flowing script with
ornate
flourishes to pitifully cramped pen scratches with too much ink. Eventually you
will
develop an eye for the handwriting.
When you definitely need a specific piece of data, but can not decipher it
yourself,
you may need to ask for help from an expert. Genline offers a service for a

Fortunately much of the handwriting and most of the images are wonderful. In
fact, the
handwriting is a pleasure to read. And as I access a page of details about my
ancestors,
I often think that I may be the only person to have looked at these details in
over 100
or 200 years. Neat.

Parish catalogs are available for most of the parishes in the following
län: Blekinge, Gävleborgs, Göteborgs och Bohus, Hallands, Jämtlands,
Jönköpings, Kalmar, Kopparbergs, Kronobergs, Norrbottens, Skaraborgs,
Södermanlands, Uppsala, Värmlands, Västerbottens, Västernorrlands, Västmanlands,
Älvsborgs, and Östergötlands. The parish catalog prices range
from $10.00 to $30.00, including sales tax, postage, and handling.
Please note that the parish catalogs do not contain actual
parish records with names of people. For information about actual parish
records, see PARISH RECORDS above. The parish catalogs are
indexes that tell you where on the microfiche (purchased separately) you
will find a specific village or farm. They contain only names of farms
and villages within a given parish. Note also that not every parish has
a parish catalog available. To see which parishes have catalogs

Parish catalogs also serve as handy lists of place names within
parishes, which will help you when trying to decipher names of farms and
villages within the records.

recently completed digitization of Swedish church records by Genline
opens the volumes of church records for even the smallest of villages for you to
pursue the records to identify your ancestors.
You will be assisted in finding the name, birth month and year of your
immigrant ancestors. Then these details are used to identify the parish from
which each immigrant ancestor originated before coming to North America. Once
the parish of origin is known through investigation, the real hunt begins for
the parents of each person. Then the hunt continues for their parents. And on
and on.
You can expect to go back 6 generations or more depending on your diligence
and patience.

this workbook to allow for it to be passed on from person to person over time.
The backs of each page remain blank so pertinent notes can be added to
personalize the workbook where appropriate. Further, each page is three hole

three ring binder. With this, pages can be added as needed.
