Genline Methods

Here is a flow chart giving the general pattern of searches.
To enter the records for the first time there are required facts:
Swedish name of a person - Birth date - Län - Parish - Farm - Date lived there.
O
Go to the Household Examination Record for Date, Län, Parish, Farm.
Reason: to verify or find the birthplace and Swedish name of the person.
O
Go to the birth volume for the person.
Reason: to find the names of the parents and the name of the farm where they lived.
O
Go to the Household Examination Record of the birth year of the person.
Reason: to find the Swedish name, birth parish, and birth date of each parent.
              O     O
Go on to do this for the father. Go on to do this for the mother
              O                        O
Repeat over and over again. Repeat over and over again.
Be patient as you work through the records. There are volumes which are difficult
to read. There are volumes that are missing. There are parish records that have
been consolidated over time. There are records that are beautifully written in a
fine hand. There are records that are extremely difficult to read due to the
handwriting. And all manner of handwriting in between.

Southern Sweden Online
Before you pay for a subscription, be sure the parishes you need for your
research are available through Genline. Further, check out the information
that is online for the Southern parishes in Sweden. These parishes have most
of the church records data entered on the internet and Genline may not be needed.

Find details about Southern Sweden parishes at:
http://www.ddss.nu/engelsk/default.asp

Translation Skills
Your knowledge of the Swedish language will eventually grow from what you know
now to more than you know now. But a knowledge of not more than 100 Swedish words
will be helpful to successfully interpret most of the entries in church records
back to the late 1700's. Earlier records before that period seem often to be
written in a text format which obviously requires skill at Swedish language
translation.

    Sweden Genealogy Genline Workbook

Available April 2006, this step-by-step workbook will help you identify and locate your Swedish ancestors. With a computer connected to the internet, thousands of resources are waiting to help you discover your pedigree. The recently completed digitization of Swedish church records by Genline opens the volumes of church records for even the smallest of villages for you to pursue the records to identify  your ancestors.

You will be assisted in finding the name, birth month and year of your immigrant ancestors. Then these details are used to identify the parish from which each immigrant ancestor originated before coming to North America. Once the parish of origin is known through investigation, the real hunt begins for the parents of each person. Then the hunt continues for their parents. And on and on.

You can expect to go back 6 generations or more depending on your diligence and patience.

Click HERE to see the pedigree developed by the author David Ullian Larson.

Click HERE to see a description of each topic covered in the workbook.

A heavy grade good quality acid free paper is used for the production of this workbook to allow for it to be passed on from person to person over time.

The backs of each page remain blank so pertinent notes can be added to personalize the workbook where appropriate. Further, each page is three hole punched so the spiral binding can be removed and the pages eventually put in a three ring binder. With this, pages can be added as needed.

8 1/2 inch by 11 inch 140 pages, three hole punched with a plastic spiral binding. Written in English.
